Put this idea into camouflage and you can dither it into overlapping scales, like adding the leaves to trees, the crenellations into the rock, so even what we think of as the familiar camo pattern becomes confused through levels of disruptive coloration at macro and micro scales together. This is how we get the latest advance in military camouflage, with pixelated and dithered patterns that are dizzying to look at, confounding our ability to parse their organizational structure. Many of the latest patterns were developed by Guy Cramer and Lt. Col. Timothy O’Neill of the aptly named HyperStealth Corporation. Some of their patterns are functional works of abstract expressionism, and I could well imagine them becoming fashion statements in a decade or two. Figure 30 shows their experimental pattern, Razzacam, based on the dazzle camouflage of World War I ships. Would it work with people? You can hardly tell where the human ends and the world begins. Where will these disguises be most effective? Or is that really the point? Maybe what’s better is that they just look so cool.
